JMMS Clubs: Student Council

T

he Jose Marti Middle School Student Council is the governing body of our students. The Student Council plans and organizes many school functions throughout the year. We are most commonly known for our school dances and the 8th grade formal dance. The Student Council also has numerous fundraising activities such as Candy-Cane-Grams for the Winter Holidays and Valentine-Flower-Grams for Valentine’s Day. Student Council also helps coordinate rallies for FCAT and Spirit Week. Also during Spirit Week, Student Council organizes the King/Queen and Prince/Princess voting. Finally, Student Council is instrumental in planning school-wide field-trips to Islands of Adventure for our 8th graders and Universal Studios for our 7th graders. And through all the good times, we never forget to give back to our community. This year, Student Council organized our fundraiser for United Way, where we raised almost $11,000 to benefit local children and families in need.

  • Host school dances and the 8th grade formal dance

  • Membership Requirements

Students nominate themselves at the beginning of the year to fill the annual position of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. After the prospective candidate's grades and conduct are reviewed by their teachers and counselors, they are eligible for the preliminary elections. The three candidates with the most votes in each respective category make it to the finals. A school-wide vote reveals the Student Council cabinet for the year.

Students interested in Jose Marti’s Student Council have many opportunities to join. Student Council is not only comprised of the cabinet but also homeroom Reading Knight representatives. These representatives are voted in during the first month of school by their peers in their homeroom or Reading Knights class. In addition to the representatives, the Student Council also accepts volunteers. Many times students are unable to win the majority in their Reading Knights classes or in the school. We allow volunteers in any aspect. Any students interested should attend meetings.
