JMMS Clubs: Odyssey of the Mind

dyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Through solving open-ended problems, students develop creative thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations.

Odyssey of the Mind is about teams solving a problem or creating presentation with their own ideas. Although thay have a coach to support and advise them, all the ideas and the work on the solution comes from the team members. One of the most important parts of our program is that nobody outside the team (not even parents, friends, or teachers) can contribute ideas or participate in designing or constructing the solution.

José Martí Middle School competes in the Tropical Region in Florida against other schools in Miami-Dade County. In the 2005-2006 school year JMMS sent four teams to the regional competition. Three of those teams placed in the top three in their respective categories and advanced to the State Finals.

As part of the Odyssey of the Mind, students will:

Form teams of up to seven students.

Choose one of five competitive problems to solve.

Work on their solutions throughout the school year.

Present their problem solution in organized competitions in the spring.
