Departments: Math

We have a talented
crew of mathematics teachers who facilitate school-wide implementation
of activities in support of the FCAT Mathematics assessment program. In
collaboration with our Soaring High Committee and the Math and Science
Instructional Improvement Team, our math teachers share strategies with
the faculty during faculty meetings and Early Release Days for
implementing the cross-curricular FCAT mathematics practices.
We have in place numerous programs in support of FCAT Mathematics
enhancement. In the Soaring High advisement classes, students are
provided with lessons containing FCAT mathematics activities and test
preparation strategies. Several after-school math tutoring programs,
which also include bilingual access, are available for all students.
Throughout the day, bilingual tutors are available for all ESOL
students in the areas of math, science, social studies, and computers.
In the mathematics classrooms, teachers use a variety of available
technology (calculators, graphing calculators, computers, computer
projection devices, and selected software programs) to
instruct/reinforce mathematical concepts and applications. The teachers
may also incorporate online classroom activities involving
collaborative projects, real-time data projects, partner projects,
projects using primary sources and archived collections, and access to
interactive test-preparation sites. Some of our mathematics teachers
post assignments and projects to their web sites and encourage the use
of student and parent e-mail as another means of communication.
